If you've decided to use a well to create your own water supply, then you need to choose the right pumping system. In some cases, a single-drop jet pump does an effective job. However, there are times when it's better to use a double-drop pump.

How do these pumps work and what are the benefits of using them?

What Is a Double-Drop Jet Pump?

The main part of a jet pump system sits above the ground. In a single-drop configuration, the system has a single pipe that goes into the ground. This pipe uses suction to draw water up and out of the well. It then goes into a storage tank where it feeds into your home.

A double-drop system works in much the same way. However, the jetting parts go into the well itself. Plus, this kind of pump has two pipes. One pulls water out of the ground and the other pushes it up into the system's storage tank.

Why Use a Double-Jet Pump?

Single-drop pumps work well in shallow wells. Their suction system can pull up water effectively if it doesn't have far to go.

However, these pumps aren't always a great way of drawing water out of deeper wells. They struggle to stay efficient at greater depths. You may have problems getting enough water to meet your needs out of the well.

Also, you're likely to have water pressure issues if the well is too deep for a single-drop system. Your pressure may not be consistent. Or, it may simply be too weak to give you the amount of water you need at the right pressure for your usage needs.

A double-drop pump doesn't have these problems. Its dual pipe configuration means that the pump can easily draw water up from greater depths. You should get a more constant supply.

Two pipes are also better than one when it comes to pressure. You shouldn't have water that runs too weakly or that dribbles when it should surge. This is especially useful if you have a larger home with more faucets and water outlets.

While you do have to house the jet mechanism in the ground, you won't see a lot of extra water system maintenance with a double-drop system. The pump's motor and other core components still sit above the ground, making them easy to access if you do have a problem.
